The International Symposium on River and Lake Environment (ISRLE) stands as a prominent freshwater ecology forum in limnology within Eastern Asia, expanding its reach to encompass the entire Asian region and even the global stage in recent years. Supported by the International Society of Limnology, this conference series, held every two to three years since 1984, has successfully convened 18 times. The 19th ISRLE will be held in November 4-8, 2024 at the Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHB-CAS) in Wuhan, China. IHB-CAS has previously hosted the conference four times in 1996, 1998, 2004, and 2012. Wuhan, known as the "city of a hundred lakes", boasts the presence of the world's third-longest river, the Yangtze River, which flows through the city, nurturing the rich Chu culture with a history spanning 2700 years. We look forward to welcoming you to Wuhan in November 2024 for ISRLE 19!
The theme of this conference is "Rivers and Lakes under Multiple Stressors". Freshwater ecosystems provide critical functions and services, but they are facing accelerated degradations globally under multiple stressors, such as eutrophication, emergent pollutants, climate change, habitat alteration, water diversion and biological invasions. These multiple stressors can interact and impact the physical, chemical, and biological processes of freshwater ecosystems, but the mechanisms of their combined effects are not yet clearly understood.
The study of limnology urgently requires the development of new methods and the conduct of multifactorial, complex system, and large-scale research. This will provide scientific guidance for the better restoration and management of these fragile ecosystems. Therefore, the main objective of ISRLE 19 is to provide a forum for discussion of the latest advancements in limnology of rivers and lakes under multiple stressors, as well as the opportunities and challenges faced, and to enhance academic exchanges between the limnology community across international counterparts. To encourage cross-community connections, ISRLE 19 will include a series of sessions grouped into 6 sub-themes such as:
Sub-theme 1: Responses of freshwater ecosystems to multiple stressors
Sub-theme 2: Trophic interactions and food web structures
Sub-theme 3: Biodiversity and ecosystem functioning
Sub-theme 4: New research methods and techniques in limnology
Sub-theme 5: Opportunities and challenges in collaborative limnological research
Sub-theme 6: Lake management and public science
